An injury or a serious illness presents an immediate risk to the live of a person or their long-term health.
Haemorrhage
• Ask the person to apply pressure on the wound for 5-10 minutes using a clean cloth or a paper towel. If the person is incapable of applying pressure, help them.
- If the haemorrhage is not stemmed, call 112 and inform the operator:
- Of the nature of the emergency.
- Of your location – building, floor and room.
- Of the number of people with you/present.
- Of the number of people injured and the type of injuries.
• Lay down the person.
• Inform the command and control centre using the internal emergency number 253 60 10 10.
• Wait with the person until help arrives.
Chemical Burns
• If you are certain that the chemical will not react with the water, wash the body part affected thoroughly with clean running water for 15 minutes.
• Remove any contaminated clothes or jewels.
- Call 112 if your eyes, hands, feet or face have burns, or if after washing it with water it continues to hurt or you feel a burning sensation, and tell the operator:
- Of the nature of the emergency.
- Of your location – building, floor and room.
- Of the number of people with you/present.
- Of the number of people injured and the type of injuries.
• Inform the command and control centre using the internal emergency number 253 60 10 10.
Thermal Burns
• First degree burns cause skin redness and pain. It can be treated with compresses or cold water.
- Call 112 if the burn causes:
- Intense pain.
- Formation of blisters.
- If your hands, feet, face and eyes have been burned.
And inform the operator:
- Of the nature of the emergency.
- Of your location – building, floor and room.
- Of the number of people with you/present.
- Of the number of people injured and the type of injuries.
• Inform the command and control centre using the internal emergency number 253 60 10 10.
Electrical shock
• If the person can cough, talk or breathe normally do not intervene. Stay near the person, encourage them to cough and be prepared to help them if their condition deteriorates.
- If the person is conscious but cannot cough, talk or breath normally call 112 and inform the operator:
- Of the nature of the emergency.
- Of your location – building, floor and room.
- Of the number of people injured and the type of injuries.
• Inform the command and control centre using the internal emergency number 253 60 10 10.
Heart attack
- If the person has persistent chest pain or inexplicable isolated discomfort in their arms, neck, back or stomach, call 112 immediately and inform the operator:
- Of the nature of the emergency.
- Of your location – building, floor and room.
• Inform the command and control centre using the internal emergency number 253 60 10 10.
• Make sure the person is in a comfortable position while you wait for medical assistance.
Unconscious person
- Call 112 immediately and inform the operator:
- Of the nature of the emergency.
- Of your location – building, floor and room.
- Of the number of people injured and the type of injuries.
• Inform the command and control centre using the internal emergency number 253 60 10 10.
• If you have
Basic Life Support training, act in accordance with its procedures.
First-aid kit
All the buildings at UMinho have a first-aid kit that contains the following products:
- 1 package of sterile gauze (20 x 20 cm).
- 1 iodopovidone antiseptic solution bottle (125 ml).
- 1 hydrogen peroxide bottle (250 ml).
- 1 physiological saline bottle (5 ml).
- 1 package of absorbent cotton wool (25 gr).
- 1 adhesive plaster (5 x 2,7 cm).
- 1 pair of scissors.
- 2 pair of sterile gloves.
- 1 roller bandage (5 m x 10 cm).
- 1 tourniquet
- 1 package of waterproof adhesive bandages (10 units).
- 1 instant cold pack.
- 1 sanitary disposal bag.
- 1 first aid guide
The four hundred first-aid kits distributed around UMinho's facilities are subjected to periodical inspections.
